Catalyst Technology


It is a chemical conversion of organic in harmless components which takes place at the catalyst. Hereby, the catalyst reduces the activation energy, so that the reaction proceeds at considerable lower temperatures compared to a process without using a catalyst. During this treatment the catalyst does not take part actively at the reaction and therefore does not waste itself.

The Chinese word for catalyst is called „marriage broker“, which clearly indicates the character of a catalyst.


For the development of a catalyst many different commercial and technical demands need to be met. The most important requirements for our industrial customers are

ReiCat fully concentrates on the customer’s personal demands. It is of high importance to find the optimum for each case.

For example, it is possible to reduce the ignition point of the catalyst minimizing the energy consumption. Under these conditions the catalyst may react more sensitive to catalyst poisons and temperature peaks occurring in real industrial processes. As a result the activity of the catalyst is decreased and the life time therefore is reduced significantly.

Bulk Catalysts


Bulk catalysts find preferred application in the field of gas purification. Except of a few ppb (parts per billion) contaminations can be eliminated completely out of the gas supply by the help of bulk catalysts. Mostly, precious metal coated (impregnated) carriers are used in form of pellets, rings, balls, etc.

The large inner surface of the carrier (up to 250 m²/gram) and the extremely thin precious metal coating (atomic precious metal with a thickness of atomic scale) guarantee the high efficiency of the bulk catalyst.

Construction and design

Both, the contact time and the necessary turbulences of the gas flow are important parameters for the construction of a reactor bed.

ReiCat offers multi-layer fillings, which provide selective elimination of different contaminations in a single reactor. Additional pre-layers made of special materials can help increasing the life-time of the catalyst.

ReiCat has more of 35 years experience in the optimal construction of flow optimized catalyst beds. Warranties for the process, gas purity and life time of the filling are given.

The easy change and the possibility of precious metal recycling of a used catalyst are two important technical and commercial advantages.

Honey Comb Catalysts


Honey comb catalysts are preferably applied for waste gas purification. The advantages of low flow resistance, high temperature resistance and easy purification have approved this catalyst for demanding industrial processes for many years.

Conversion rates up to 99 % can be reached!

Furthermore, the application of honey comb catalysts is recommendable in the field of gas purification, as far as the requirement of the end purity is not too high. The aluminium oxide coated carrier monolith will be impregnated with different precious metals and forms the active phase.

The monolith shows a variety of channels, which are flowed by the gas luminary. The number of channels is indicated in mesh/sqi and shows the effective surface, on the other hand it influences the expected pressure loss. Normally, channel densities of 100, 200 and 400 (mesh/sqi) are used.

Construction and design

The combs will be stuck together to modules in ReiCat’s factory. The modules instead will be manufactured order related either to catalyst walls or to small catalyst inserts. For production only high temperatures and corrosion resistant materials will be used. Exchangeability of units can be guaranteed due to accurate manufacturing.

If life time of the activity phase is reached, the precious metal of the combs can be recycled and the money equivalent is reimbursed to the customer.

  • Honey comb catalysts are preferably applied in the field of waste gas purification.


  • Waste gases in form of hydrocarbons result from many technical processes (roasting, coating, painting, hardening) (VOC).
  • By means of catalysts these unhealthy and polluting hydrocarbons will be splitted and converted into harmless components (CO2/Carbon Dioxide and water).

Metal Catalysts


The carrier of metal catalysts consists of metal foil, wire cloth or sintered material.

Depending on the application (oxidation of hydrocarbons, hydrogen, carbon monoxides etc.) the surface will be coated with different precious metals.


Metal catalysts are preferably used for the exhaust gas treatment of engines or in applications, where strong pulsations, vibrations, pressure shocks and other mechanical loads are expected.

Recycling / Recovery of Precious Metals

For the production of bulk, honey comb and metal catalysts different precious metals and rare earth elements are applied. Over time the efficiency of a catalyst can decrease.

The reasons can be the following:

  • Presence of catalyst poisons
  • Thermal overload
  • Surface coverage by dust or polymerization
  • Mechanical damage (abrasion / pressure shock)

ReiCat guarantees high life time of catalyst by an optimum of process and design development. The reduction of performance of a catalyst is slow-going, but can eventually be monitored by the help of temperature measurements.

It is the service of ReiCat to offer remote control for high availability units for the prevention of unexpected but avoidable shutdown times. If the end of the life cycle is achieved, ReiCat takes back the catalyst for recycling/recovery.

Acceptance and reimbursement

The precious metal will be separated from the carrier at precious metal separating works. The exact content will be analyzed and certified. Up to 97 % (less additional charges) of the precious metal money equivalent (depending on the today’s world market price) can be reimbursed to the customer.
